Unfortunately this structure - sometimes called the Rose Tower
- lacks any good tale, probably because it seems hard to actually
work out what it might have been built for in the first place. Standing
nearly 70 foot tall, it looks like a dove cote with
its holes to allow the birds access, but it seems that this is not
its purpose. There may have been a floor at the base of the cone above
the arches, but this is also uncertain. The structure, which bears
a passing resemblance to the towers of Ireland, has been aptly described
as "a highly functional structure designed for no function that
has yet materialized"
Visiting:-
I took this above photograph from a lane just below the cone to the
south, - admittedly with a zoom lens - as the footpaths on this particular
visit were closed, because of Foot and Mouth restrictions, in force
at the time.
Gary
Player visited the park only recently and took this very good shot
of the cone at sunset.
