Perched at some 816 ft, high on Carn Brea hill stands
Carn Brea sham castle. It is situated to the eastern end of the boulder
covered summit, and overlooks the cornish towns of Cambourne and Red
Ruth. It was originally built as a hunting lodge in the 18th century
on ancient earthworks, then added to and altered by the Bassetts of
Tehidy.
Apart
from its small medieval appearance, Carn Brea Castle boasts another
striking feature. Part of its foundations are fused into the summits
boulders themselves and the structure seems to grow upwards from the
rocks beneath. Giving the impression that the building is suffering
from a hideous disfigurement. Adding a touch of fantasy.

A
local tale of Carn Brea depicts a furious battle, which took place between
the saints and the devil. Legend tells how the devil tumbled down the
hill as the saints hurled the many boulders scattered around the summit
after him. Another legend tells of a John of Gaunt, a giant who may
be buried beneath the castle..
The castle is now privately owned and is probably one of Britain's most
remote restaurants. The view the diners enjoy is superb. One of the
finest in Cornwall.

Along
the ridge, at the western end of the hill stands the Redruth Tower.
Visiting
Carn Brae
Castle is accessible to the public. However the approach road is very
rocky and care must be taken. Parking is very limited at the end of
the lane.
