These remains of a Norman church are in the middle of a 2500 BC neolithic earth circle. The early church builders favoured building on old pagan sites as a way of eliminating the previous religion of its converted flock, hence its position in this case.
The Plague
The church was altered in the 14th century shortly before the nearby village of Knowlton, that it served, was mostly wiped out by the plague. This village has been the subject of study since the outline of it was found on aerial photos taken during a dry summer.
There is no graveyard to be seen now, just the partial, peaceful remains, on which some recent remedial work has been carried out.
Access to the circle and church is free, via a small lane sign posted Wimborne St Giles, located off the B3078 Wimborne to Cranborne road, a mile north of the Horton Inn. (Limited parking for 2 or 3 cars)
