Offwell: Copplestone`s Folly
This is an eighty foot tall square tower, with an elegant balustraded top to it. It was built by Bishop Edward Copplestone in 1828. He was appointed Bishop of Llandaff in South Wales, and decided that if he could see his diocese from the top of the tower he would save himself the journey of having to visit it!
Nice story, however if you now reach for the atlas and locate Offwell.......I will say no more.

Lawrence Castle
Also known as Haldon Belvedere, this is to be found just south of Dunchideock near Exeter, overlooking Dartmoor. It is a much favoured triangular design with turrets rising up at each corner, although in this case it was large enough to actually use as a home, as it even had a ballroom inside. Built by Sir Robert Palk in 1788 as a memorial to his friend Major General Lawrence, it sits 800 feet above sea level giving you excellent views of the Exe valley.
The top floor is also available for letting, if you have ever fancied a holiday in unusual surroundings.
