G o r i n g F o l l y
If Planning Officers had existed in the 17th and 18th centuries then we would not have any of this country`s marvelous follies.
Why you should even need planning permission to build a folly I can`t understand. If for example my neighbour wanted to build an extension I would naturally be concerned. On the other hand though, if they wished to build a 150 foot tall folly in their rear garden.... well I imagine I speak for everyone when I say I couldn`t imagine anybody objecting to such a marvelous project.
Modern Day Folly
So it seems modern day follies are thin on the ground, but not in Goring-by-Sea in West Sussex. Timothy Blewitt a retired art teacher constructed his own folly in his rear garden. Not a 150 foot tall tower, but a cross between a gazebo, mini tower and grotto.
Timothy dug a 4 metre deep well, reached by steps from ground level, then built a 4 metre tower over the top of this. Like many a good folly this had an attached ruined arch with a Gothic style summer house. The work involved in this 14 month project is amazing as you can see if you visit his excellent site,
Hypothermia and Injuries
In the process of the building work Timothy managed to get hypothermia and also needed an operation from injuries he received. Finally after 8 tons of soil being removed and 8000 bricks being laid, the project was complete.
What use is it after all this hard work?
Well none really - that is why it is a folly.
Visiting:-
It is not possible, as
it built in Mr Blewitts back Garden.
