H o y l a n d L o w e

This rather dilapidated hunting lodge consisting of two storeys with a tower attached to the side, was most likely built in the mid 18th century. It is thought to have been a hunting lodge to the Marquis of Rockingham, who in 1750 is reported as writing "I have built a tower at Hoyland Law". Another reference I found though attributed it to being a hunting lodge for Tankersley Park situated half a mile or so to the west. Whoever was the builder it seems it was originally one of a pair, the other one Lady's Folly has since gone to the great folly heaven in the sky.
If the original users of the lodge could now see the view from the top, you can only wonder what they would think. As what was once their hunting ground is now host to one of the busiest roads in the country, the M1, that runs immediately past this sad structure.
