Anybody who comes and goes out of Lymington harbour, must have at some time noticed the slender tapering point of an obelisk, peering out over the tops of the trees on Mount Pleasant Hill situated on the right hand bank, as you enter the harbour.
Sir Harry Neale
This obelisk is a memorial dedicated to the memory of Sir Harry Burrard Neale, who died at Brighton in 1840. This man apparently led a very full life, having joined the navy at the age of 13 and rising to the rank of Admiral, before dying at the age of 85.
During his naval career he saw a considerable amount of action and at one time was serving on the then Royal Yacht.
Sir Harry was also MP for Lymington for 40 years. This caused some problems when he was offered control of the navy`s concerns at their Portsmouth dockyard, a proviso being he gave up his seat in the House of Commons, he naturally refused. He then raised the matter in the House himself, and was told the Admiralty were quite within their rights, so the top job eluded him.
Visiting:-
Access to view is easily achieved by going up the aptly named Monument Lane, where a couple of hundred yards up, you will find the obelisk on your left hand side with a small pull-in to park.
