There are many tales associated with Mad jack Fuller, my own favourite is the time when he was talking to the vicar of the nearby St Giles church at Dallington, and proclaimed that he could see the spire of the vicar's church from his own house, and went on to back this boast up with a wager.
Upon returning home he found that a large hill was in fact in the way, and blocking the view. Undaunted he built a mock spire near the road joining Battle to Heathfield, which when viewed from his house, gave the appearance of the church's spire in the distance.

It is said Jack collected his wager, although whether the vicar
eventually tumbled to the fact he was deceived is unknown.
The term sugar loaf by the way for any non UK readers, coming
from the fact that at the time sugar came in so called 'loaves' that
had this conical appearance to them.
