The story behind this 35 foot tall tower is that Mad Jack had
it built so he could see the on-going progress of the restoration of
Bodiam Castle, which Jack had recently bought for £3000.
The reason for the purchase it seems was to save the castle from demolition,
whilst an improbable thing to happen today it was not an unknown occurrence
of the time, before the word 'Heritage' came into being.
The tower itself is hollow and at one time had a wooden staircase inside,
so it seems there could be an element of truth in the story.
Carl
Curtis visited the tower in the springtime of 2006 and reports, "It
is now possible to climb the tower via a new steel staircase. If one
is feeling very brave, a fixed, steel ladder is provided to enable the
visitor to peer through the round window at the top of the tower to
enjoy the view. This is certainly not recommended if you suffer from
vertigo!"
