Hidden away from the general populace, and thankfully vandals, is this delightful tower at the rear of Pitshill House, near Tillington, Petworth. It is thought to have been built in the late 18th or early 19th century, by a member of the Mitford family. It consists of just two floors which are now in need of extensive repair due to a roof; that does little to protect the tower from the elements.
The ground floor, with its large open central arch, still gives a hint of finer times that might have been offered to the occupants of the wooden bench that can still be found in-situ inside. A balmy summer evening, drink in hand, in quiet thought, as your 85 acre estate loses the lazy heat of the day.
The Georgian Pitshill House is now Grade 2 listed, due in part maybe to the fact that Sir John Soanes had a hand in some remodelling and alterations that were carried out in the 1830's. Also to be found in the grounds is a small domed shell house, of indeterminate age. At the time of writing - September 2004 - the main house is empty, and like the tower neglected, a situation that will hopefully soon be rectified.
