The heart of the wonderful Savernake forest, has not only the glorious 100 foot column erected by the Earl of Ailesbury, but also this much smaller memorial.
The history behind this however, is not so well documented.

Unknown History:-
The details were first brought to my attention by John Gray, a work colleague, who sent the above photo to me, and a suggestion that it may possibly have been a memorial that was erected to someone who died as the result of falling from their horse. The monument has sadly suffered badly, from both time and vandals, and the inscription tablet is no longer present.

Photo courtesy of Rob Dickens who has a handy Marlborough web site (See Links Page)
In researching the monument's background I made contact with Rob and Angela Dickens who kindly supplied the second photograph, which like the first, clearly shows the neglect.
As of the present I am no wiser to the history, so any information on this, from anyone would be appreciated.
Visiting:-
It is hard to find, located off the path called the 'Grand Avenue'.
Utilise the map co-ordinates below.
