Stansfield Tower dominates the skyline of Blacko
village. It was built around 1890-1899 by a local businessman, a successful
grocer named John Stansfield. It is a slender and tall beacon tower
with hesitant castellations. Some believe that it is thought to stand
on the original site of the Malkin tower which may be associated with
the witch trials of 1692.
There
seem to exist three likely tales as to why Mr. Stansfield built his
tower in such a predominant position. The first being that he wanted
to be able to view the sea, the second tells that he believed that
he would be able to see far into Ribblesdale from the top of his tower,
but he was proved wrong.
Shrugging off his disappointment at this he remarked, "I've never
drunk nor smoked in my life, so I am making this tower as my hobby."
The final story tells that he was just trying to see his girlfriend
in Gisburn.
In
1954 a gang of art students painted the tower white.
