The third Duke of Bridgewater who had the Bridgewater Memorial dedicated to him was originally born plain Francis Egerton. Fifty-seven years after the Duke's death (1803), another Francis Egerton also had a memorial built.
This latter Egerton, who was originally called Francis Leveson-Gower, was a member of the family who had inherited the Duke of Bridgewater's estate upon his death all those years earlier (the Duke had died a bachelor not leaving a family).
Francis Leveson-Gower then became the first Earl of Bridgewater in 1846 and it was at this point in time that he changed his name, to become the second Francis Egerton.

The monument was erected in 1860, and was recently for sale for £225,000. It is a Grade 2 listed structure, and has a spiral staircase inside for access to the top. The owners had applied at one time to knock it down, but this was refused.
